Characteristics

Surface hardenable tool steel with hard surface and tough core. Used for cold heading dies, top and bottom plates for plastic die casting, die casting tools, hand tools, tongs, agricultural tools, blanking tools, leather knives.

Supply conditions

Annealed to max 207 HB

Heat treatment

Annealing

  • Heat to 680-710 C
  • Furnance cooling

Stess relieving

  • Heat to 600-650 C
  • Furnance cooling

Hardening

  • Preheating 600-650 C
  • Heat to hardening temperature 800-830 C and hold at temperature
  • Cooling in water
  • Hardness after quenching: HRC 57

Tempering

  • To be carried out after hardening in the range of 300-350 C for 1 hour for 20mm of thickness min 2 h

This steel is suitable for nitriding (around 800 HV), chrome and nickel plating. Used for plastic dies with excellent surface finish properties. It is also used for dies of light alloys with low melting point, plates, dies box, etc.

Hardened and Tempered Normal HB 280-325 (950-1100 N/mm)

Heat treatment

Annealing

  • Heat to 720-750 C for 2-4 h furnace cool

Stess relieving

  • Up to 560-600 C, hold for 2-4 h
  • Furnace or steel air cooling

Hardening

  • Preheating to 600-650 C
  • Heat to hardening temperature to 840-870 C and hold at temperature
  • Cooling in oil
  • Hardness after hardening: HRC 51

Tempering

  • To be carried out soon after hardening in the range 580-650 C for 1 hour for 25 mm of thickness min 2h

It can be subject to a nitriding treatment to improve its wear resistance. Main applications: injections and thermoplastic extrusion moulds, rubber moulds, moulds carrier frames, containers.

Hardened and Tempered Normal HB 300-340

Heat treatment

Annealing

  • Heat to 710-740 C, with hold at minimum rate for 3 hours
  • Slow furnance cooling to 600 C

Stess relieving

  • To be carried out after machining and before the final heat treatment
  • Heating to 530-580 C for 2h

Hardening

  • Preheating 500-550 C
  • Austenizing at 840-880 C
  • Oil or thermal bath cooling at 200-230 C, then oil cooling according to the steel shape size
  • Quenched hardness 52-54 HRC

Tempering

  • To be carried out after hardening and when the steel is at 60-80 C, at 500-600 C according to the required hardness and with permanence for at least 2h
  • Cooling in the air

VR400 is a prehardened steel to be used for plastic injections moulds, compression moulds, etc, offering improved performance for the mould makers as well as the mould user. VR400 is designed to provide an improved machinability andfinishing operations like polishing and chemical etching.

Hardened and Tempered Normal HB 360-390 (aiming at 380)

Heat treatment

Annealing

  • Heat to 600-650 C and hold at minimum rate for 1 hour per inch
  • Furnace cooling

Stess relieving

  • To be carried out after machining and before the final heat treatment
  • Heat to 550-600 C for 1 hour per inch

Hardening

  • Austenitizing at 860-880 C for 30 minutes per inch
  • Cooling in polymer
  • Quenched hardness: 48-52 HRC

Tempering

  • To be carried out soon after hardening
  • Heat to 560-600 C for 1 hour per inch
  • To achieve maximum stability and release tension,tempering must be repeated 30C less than first

Characteristics

Stainless martensitic steel with a high hardenability, good polishing properties, excellent resistance to corrosion and hot oxidation. Its applications are plastic moulds, particularly for acid aggressive plastics (i.e. acetate and PVC), or plastics containing abrasive fillers. Suited for the manufacture of glass, such as moulds of optical products.

Heat treatment

Annealing

  • Heat to 845-870 C and hold at minimum rate for 3 hours
  • Coling up to 600 C and hold at minimum for 3 hours
  • Furnace cooling

Stess relieving

  • To be carried out after machining and before the final heat treatment
  • Heat to 600-650 C for 2 hours, furnace cooling

Hardening

  • Preheat to 600-700 C
  • Austenizing at 1000-1050 C in oil, considering the steel shape and size
  • Cooling in oil, air
  • Quenched hardness: 52-56 HRC

Tempering

  • To be carried out after the hardening according to the required hardness; at 170-270 C in order to match hardness and resistance to corrosion; permanence for at least 2 hours; tempering must be repeated at least twice at a temperature 30 C lower than the previous.
  • Cooling in the air
